Louis Massonneau Oboe Quartets

The current CD "Louis Massonneau Oboe Quartets“ was issued in August, 2005 and features all three oboe quartets by Massonneau, a contemporary of Beethoven. Two of the quartets have also been recorded here for the first time. You can listen to excerpts from both CDs on this website.

Musical Background

Louis Massonneau
… grew up at the court of Kassel and received his musical education in the court’s chamber orchestra. After several engagements as concertmaster in various court orchestras, Massonneau settled permanently in Ludwigslust near Schwerin, where he died in 1848. He was well respected by his contemporaries and produced a rich body of musical compositions. The three oboe quartets are full of fresh musical ideas, which – cleverly combined – evoke quite different moods and timbres, resulting in very entertaining and substantive works of art.
